Worst SEO Mistakes to Avoid

Search engine optimization gets thrown around a lot in the online business industry.

Many articles and videos are teaching you how to do SEO.

However, few will tell you about the worst SEO mistakes to avoid.

What many do not know is that some actions, or inactions, can harm your website.

Google is very picky when it chooses a web page to rank.

If you do not meet its conditions, you will find your web page buried among millions of other web pages.

Today, I will show you these mistakes. After reading this tutorial, I would like you to take action and start correcting them.

If you have not made these mistakes, then good for you—but avoid them at all costs.

  1. No Backlinking Efforts

Backlinks are the veins that pump blood into your website.

Without backlinks, you cannot expect Google and other search engines to rank your pages.

And if your pages do not rank, they will not get traffic.

Why? Because backlinks are a vote of confidence.

Backlinking refers to the action of getting links from one website to another.

You can see this as a collaborative strategy between you and other website owners.

This is done to establish a more efficient traffic and lead generation.

This is one of the ways that website owners do to increase their credibility and heighten their reputation.

It is also used to widen a site’s recognition. In some cases, you can get backlinks naturally.

A natural backlink means a website owner linked to your site without you asking him.

But with millions of pages, how likely will another website owner find yours and link back to you?

Here are some of the effects of not having backlinks on your website:

  • There is a low possibility that your traffic will increase.
  • It will take a longer time for you to build a large visitor base.
  • Establishing a trustworthy and credible site can get difficult.
  • There will be little to no audience engagement.
  • The quality of SEO can deteriorate over time.

You can get backlinks by guest posting. This is a lot of work.

If you guest post, you need to the permission of the site owner.

Plus, you need to put in the effort to write an article that meets the standards of the website owner.

Or, you can join Backlink Society.

It is an organization where you can swap backlinks with other bloggers, affiliate markets, and online store owners.

With this group, you can choose the website niches you where you want to get backlinks from.

  1. Not Using the Right Keywords

According to Moz’ study, only an average of 6% of users goes past the first page.

They are the ones who view the results on the second page.

What does this mean?

It means that you should work hard to get your article on the first page.

One of the most important things to do is to use the appropriate SEO keywords.

The right keywords allow Google to understand the context of your web content.

Keywords are used by website owners to continuously improve their visibility.

Using the right keywords also results in higher ranks in search engines; there will be a higher chance that users will see your content when they search for a particular keyword.

Here are the bad things that can happen if you do not use the right keywords:

  • It can lower your rank in search engines.
  • It will result in low visibility and low traffic generation.
  • Using repetitive keywords or keyword stuffing can also lower the quality of your SEO.
  • Search engines may find it hard to identify the relevance of your content.

There are many paid and free keyword research tools.

What I recommend is that you use Google Trends, UberSuggest, and Answer the Public. All of these are free.

  1. Not Optimizing Page Speed

Studies recommend that a website must take three seconds and below to load.

Anything higher than this will make a website visitor leave.

A website’s page speed defines the time it takes to show the page.

These actions may be the initial loading, call-to-action, and anything as long as it is performed on the website.

If your website speed is low, it frustrates a user. And if a user leaves, Google is going to know.

Here are the negative impacts of low page speed:

  • This can increase your website’s bounce rate.
  • Visitors who leave the website can outweigh the number of those that are actually staying.
  • Search engines give penalties to sites that don’t load well.
  • It will be difficult to maintain your current traffic.
  • Page speed is one of the factors that affect a website’s SEO rank. (Slow Page Speed = Low Rank)

There are many ways to optimize a page’s loading speed.

You can enable file compressions, reduce scripts and redirects, optimize the contents itself, and/or improving a browser’s cache system.

  1. Buying backlinks

The importance of backlinks has been discussed previously.

Probably, a lot of users have already understood how helpful it can be when done properly.

However, you cannot get backlinks so easily.

You need to invest in creating good content for your visitors.

Because of this, some opt to purchase backlinks from backlinking sites and service providers.

And this is one of the worst SEO mistakes to avoid

Because if Google finds out, your website will get penalized.

Now, does Google really know if you paid a backlink? No, it doesn’t.

However, it knows that your backlinks are coming from PBN, directories, etc.

Here are the bad effects of buying backlinks:

  • Penalty and page rank demotion
  • Total loss of ranking
  • Search engines will not think your website is credible

Buying a backlink is always bad—the only reasonable way to do so is to pay a reputable website owner to backlink to you.

But do not do this often. Google will see abnormalities, and you will be penalized.

You can see that backlink buying as an artificial strategy, and it doesn’t really add value to your website pages.

Hence, it is best that you should still consider natural methods like increasing your website’s value because this provides results that are more likely to last long.

  1. Producing Low-Quality Content

The content of your website has the biggest impact on SEO.

No matter what you do about optimizing your pages, you will not get traffic if you are producing bad content.

Even if you use a keyword planner, you will not get traffic if your content is bad.

There was a time when you can publish gibberish, and you can still rank.

You cannot do that today. The name of the game now is to produce high-quality content that provides value.

If you publish bad content, these things can happen:

  • There is a high possibility that your visitors will bounce out of the page.
  • It is not likely for your audience to return to your website.
  • It will be difficult for you to rank up on search engines.
  • Having low-quality content will lower your credibility as a blogger.

As you can see, there is totally no good thing that comes out of creating irrelevant content.

This is one of the important steps in SEO.

If you are having difficulties writing good content, you need to outsource this to an affordable yet dependable writer—someone who understands SEO and content value

Your website’s overall quality greatly relies on what it is found in it.

Invest a great amount of effort and time into publishing articles that are relevant and sought after by your target market.

  1. Not Publishing Regularly

Having good content is not enough. You have to publish regularly.

Google loves websites that offer fresh content on a regular basis.

If you only publish once in a while, Google will notice this pattern and will crawl your website less.

This creates inconsistency, and Google may ignore you in the future.

This is something that most beginners do. They get overwhelmed with the volume of what they need to write.

You do not have to write every day. What’s important is you publish regularly.

It can be once a week or three times a month.

Here are the reasons why publishing content irregularly is a bad idea:

  • Your website will hardly become visible to search results.
  • It can be close to impossible for you to rank up your SEO game.
  • There are limited keywords involved in your website.
  • You may generate small to no traffic and reach a little part of your target audience.

The importance of high-quality contents is greatly emphasized in the previous section.

Therefore, how you put it out into the internet is equally significant.

If you are too busy to write high-quality content, outsource your work to someone else.

  1. Not Publishing on Social Media

Social media is a gold mine of traffic. Also, Google loves it if your website gets shared in social media.

It tells Google that you are popular and that your content is widely shared.

Social media sites include websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and the likes.

As long as its sole purpose is to connect its users, it is social media.

There are billions of users on Facebook, which makes it an ideal app for content marketing.

Overlooking its benefit means you are missing out on a lot of potential traffic.

Below are some of the disadvantages of not publishing your content and website updates on social media:

  • It will be difficult for you to let your constant visitors know whenever there is new content posted.
  • You can’t fully engage with your readers.

Social media marketing is a free strategy. It won’t require money in registering for accounts and/or pages.

This is something that a website owner should always have.

  1. Not Optimizing Website for Mobile

According to DataReportal’s study, there are approximately 5.15 billion mobile users.

This is 53% of the total number of internet users.

Your website must be mobile-optimized. It must adjust its appearance if a mobile device is used.

What will happen if a website is not optimized for mobile devices?

  • It will be difficult to get traffic; people will leave your site if it is not mobile-optimized.
  • It is nearly impossible to appeal to users
  • Google will not rank your page if it is not mobile-friendly.

You can make your website mobile-friendly by using responsive themes and features.

You can also use tools that are designed to check whether a website is optimized for mobiles or not.
